When assessing markets, marketers should distinguish between the shipments and sales data which government sources usually provide (as per sources below), and marketplace demand data, which data are not routinely and generally provided by governments for all market segments. Apparent domestic demand can then be calculated by adding imports and subtracting exports from domestic shipment data. Primary research is usually needed in addition to secondary data to deepen the assessment, inform specific questions and explore strategic choices companies are considering.
